Directional Boring offers a cost competitive alternative to trenching. Directional boring involves the creation of a precisely guided pilot hole. This process directs the drill bit and drill head to specified exit point, either at the surface or in a manhole or exit pit. Directional boring first gained popularity in the telecom installation markets. Deteriorating water and sewer systems usually found in well- established urban or suburban areas, makes traditional excavation difficult, if not possible. Advances in technology and a growing acceptance of the trenchless construction process by engineers, directional boring is making new installations faster and easier.
Pipe and conduit construction has traditionally involved digging a trench, then laying pipe or conduit and finally covering it back up. Excavation can be disruptive; damaging surface improvements and impeding traffic. Once pipe or conduit is laid in the ground, the repair of streets, driveways, sidewalks and landscaping can be time consuming and costly.
